Canadian Task Force Issues Type 2 Diabetes Screening Guidelines
The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care has published guidelines on screening asymptomatic adults for type 2 diabetes in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Among the recommendations:
- Adults at very high risk for diabetes — as assessed by validated risk calculators that take into account age, obesity, history of elevated blood glucose, among other factors — should undergo annual screening with measurement of glycated hemoglobin.
- Adults at high risk and adults who are aged 40 and older at low-to-moderate risk should undergo glycated hemoglobin screening every 3 to 5 years.
Adults under age 40 who are at low-to-moderate risk should not undergo routine screening.
